Photis Kontoglou (1895-1965) – Hagiographer & Writer, Orthodox and Hellene

My (admittedly poor) translation:

“People have become like empty pitchers, filling themselves with all kinds of events and shows, monstrocities of what they call books, inane sporting events and lectures, pageants in which beauty is measured with a measuring tape, stupid carnivals, and by joining different clubs where they have dinners and the like with serious discussions about the shadow of a donkey and the like. They also join other associations dedicated to European man who has created himself in God’s image. This, at a glance, is the picture of humanity today, let us be proud of it! Where is a man to find shelter? … Glory be to God, there is still a place of refuge for us who are not capable of feeling “the greatness of our age.” Glory to God that there are still some places that have not yet learned of this dried up tree called modern civilization.”
